FAQ's

{via}

On a daily basis, I receive anywhere from 5 to 10 emails from my sweet readers asking for tips, suggestions, ideas, recommendations, how-to's, etc. on how to start a blog, gain followers, create content, design graphics, and get involved. I wanted to dedicate a post to what I've learned along the way and answer a few of your questions...

When/why did you decide to start a fashion blog?

I majored in Textiles & Clothing at Ohio State and jumped into a career as a clothing buyer after college. When I would study trends for future buying trips, I started reading blogs to stay on top of the fashion industry and what to expect season after season. I was completely obsessed and thought "I could do this." In 2010, I decided to start a blog that was completely lifestyle based. It was a place to share photos with my family and friends and to document things that I liked. It was never something that I had high hopes for, just a fun little spot for me. A year later I left my job as a clothing buyer and went in a completely different direction. All of the blogs that I followed were making big jumps and I decided that I wanted my blog to be a place for others as well as for me. So I went in a completely different direction and started another blog. I loved this little blog, it felt "home-y" to me. This was around the time when photography and family blogs {this one is still my favorite} were really gaining speed, so I thought that was the direction I wanted to take. Turns out not so much...
Fast forward a year or so and I began to feel a huge void in my life. I missed the fashion industry, I missed styling customers, and I finally had an idea and a direction I wanted to take my blog. Clearly, a new name was necessary and Sequins & Stripes was born! It took awhile to find my niche, but each step, each blog, led me to what I really wanted to do.
{bet you didn't know that :)}

How did you make your blog grow? What tips can you give for gaining readership?

I can't stress enough the importance of maintaining your own voice. The blog world is a funny place, and I can say with 100% certainty that everyone feels "pressure" to be the best. What is the best? That's a stupid idea. So if you are blogging to be the best, or to be the mirror image of your favorite blog, then your blog will only make it so far. To grow your blog successfully, you have to think of yourself as one. Be true to yourself, create consistent content that is based on your own opinions + likes, create a clear platform to showcase your ideas, use pretty graphics, get involved in the community, comment on other blogs, utilize social media, and participate! The blogging community is what you make of it.

What made you decide to start offering styling services?

I have to say, I was fortunate enough to have a jump start on this. First of all, I have been organizing people's closets since high school. I am somewhat OCD and have always loved helping people purge and refresh their wardrobes. After I left my job as a buyer, I continued to work with a few of my customers on the side - changing over their closets, sending over shopping suggestions for a new season, dressing them for an event, etc. Word of mouth is a pretty good tool to have on your side, so when I decided to make the jump into styling, I had an amazing support network that helped make the process really easy. My blog was my resume and my portfolio, and has drawn 90% of my customers. *Another reason why your blog should always be consistent and true to yourself!

What program do you use to create your graphics?

I use Photoshop. However, a little newbie trick...for month's I used Powerpoint and saved layouts as images! Eventually I turned to YouTube to teach my the in's and out's of Adobe, which is a whole new world.

What does your typical work day look like?

I wake up between 6:30 and 6:45, make a cup of coffee, and check to make sure my post went live. I then promote my post on Twitter and Facebook, check and respond to emails, and visit a few of my favorite blogs. I head to the gym and get ready for the day, which consists of assembling styling strategies for clients, working with sponsors and promotional features, laying out future blog posts, invoicing, updating Quickbooks, emails, and either in-person or Skype meetings. I try to shut down by 6pm to eat dinner with Dave and Webster, catch up on my favorite shows, and get a good night's sleep! I am usually in bed by 10 so I can do it all over again tomorrow.

Where do you find inspiration?

Aside from Pinterest {that's kinda sad, right?}, I am always inspired when I unplug. I love to go out for dinner, cook dinner with my girlfriends, grab a beer with Dave; I love to go shopping by myself, or take Webster for a walk along the lakefront. Sometimes I feel like my brain is on sensory overload staring at a computer all day, so getting outside always helps me to see a little clearer.

----

So that's it. A little tough love for those of you trying to map your way through the blog world, but in all honesty, I am just like you. This blog and my profession does not separate me in any way. I am still trying to navigate through my twenties, and if owning a business is something to be jealous of, trust me, sometimes the good days are few and far between. It's a learning process! But a fun one.

Have any other questions? I'd love to do a FAQ post once every few months if people are interested. Happy Friday!

I thought it was high time to bring back a reader favorite: Fashion Meets Interiors. Here are a few recent images I've been using as inspiration for my home, my closet, and seasons to come!

Seasonal Style

September thru December is my season. All of my wardrobe favorites are perfect for this time of year and I always feel like I am more put-together during the cooler months {I think layers have that effect on me}. If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you know that I at times tend to dress like I'm 5. My days consist of cropped pants, cozy sweaters, embellished ballet flats, and fun accessories, and the evenings are the perfect time to pull out my girliest pieces {think bows, ruffles, metallics, and leopard}.

What is your favorite season to dress for?

Bundle Up

ASOS always has the best bang for your buck when it comes to coats and jackets {and just about everything else}. Although my field jacket has been a staple thus far, I am thinking I need to invest in one of these beauties.

The Beauty Lineup

When the weather starts to change and the days get a bit cooler, my skin becomes super dry. I am not a fan of layering lotions, eye cremes, primer, foundation, etc. day after day {it makes me feel like a wax statue} so I am all about easy formulas that can multi-task when my skin needs them. Above are a few of my favorite products to take me from day to night. If you're like me and your skin gets sensitive to the dry weather, I highly recommend BareMinerals Cell Renewal Night Creme and Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm. I am also a huge fan of a creme blush for winter and fall, always seems to last much longer.

Any beauty secrets I should know about? I am all ears!

Wise Words

After weekends like that, it is good to remind yourself of the type of person you want to be.

Today is busy {although I hate to use that word}, so my post is brief. However, you can find me guest posting on Things That Sparkle sharing some fall pieces worth the investment AND I'll be on Alice + Trixie's blog later sharing my favorites from their new fall collection!

Happy Tuesday!

The First Taste of Fall

Hi friends! We are in Northern Michigan welcoming fall and celebrating the life of a wonderful woman. It has been extremely chilly and I have been bouncing around the adorable lake towns in my field jacket and Jack Rogers booties. We have been enjoying walks along the water, afternoon brews, cozy sweaters, pumpkin donuts, wine tasting, and hot apple cider, which in my book is pretty much the perfect ingredients for fall. Although it is a sad circumstance that brings us here, something tells me that it is right where we need to be. Happy Monday! xo

Friday Finds

Have you seen Emerson Fry's new fall collection? It's amazing. I am especially obsessed with the Army Coat.

I think I found the perfect fall boot - Tory Burch's Jess Riding Boot. That gold buckle at the heel is so classic.

Heidi Merrick's Holiday 2012 collection is adorable. How cute are those little masks?

This Sophie Hulme tote has absolutely everything I want in a bag. Gold hardware, classic tan color, and no label.

Any fabulous finds I should know about? Do tell!

My Newest Obsession: Swirl

Today I want to introduce to my newest obsession: Swirl. Let me start by saying, I am not very tech savvy {I am much more of a pen + paper person}, so when something comes along that makes my life a little easier, I become crazy obsessed. Enter Swirl. I know what I like, but I don't always have the time to pop into every store in hopes that I'll find the newest IT bag, or the perfect pair of pumps {which the blog world so ferociously has me on the hunt for!}. With Swirl you can discover the latest trends and offers, organize the things you love, and then go shop for them at retailers nearby. Yes you heard that right, you can browse their catalog, clip your favorite items, and Swirl will show you the closest store to your exact location {pretty sweet, huh?}. My favorite part about Swirl is the Offers tab, which keeps you up-to-date on all in-store and online sales at your favorite retailers! If you're like me, and quickly delete your emails as they come in, I tend to miss these sales - but with Swirl, I can see every sale at my fingertip, you'll also receive alerts when prices on your favorite items drop! Seriously the perfect app for fashionista's on the go. So if you are looking to start a shopping list of your favorite items for fall, I highly recommend downloading Swirl today. I promise it will not disappoint!

{This is not a sponsored post, I was introduced to Swirl and just had to share!}

GP + J.Crew

Did anyone see Gwyneth's adorable J.Crew styling on Goop? I've always been a huge fan of GP but these images sorta pushed me into a full on obsession. Not only does she look amazing in each and every outfit, but she created the most perfect fall pairings.

These Etta pumps are pretty close to the top of my wish list for fall {specifically in gold and snake}, also this toggle coat would be ideal. If I'm wishing for things...

12 Fall Favorites

A few of my favorites for fall, just in case you were interested :)

What Fall Means to Me

This week marks the official start of fall {Saturday to be exact} and I wanted to share a few things on my list to accomplish before the holidays roll around:

Exercise before work and get dressed up everyday
Call those that I haven't spoken with in awhile.
Visit an apple orchard.
Host a dinner party in our new place.
Don't fall asleep to the TV, instead start a good book {nightly Friends episodes are my weakness}.
Make the most of each day
Walk instead of drive.
Say please and thank you more, just because.
Cook some yummy soups.
Light a candle no matter what time of day it is.
Make some homemade cider.
Don't stress about tomorrow.

For some reason, I feel that fall is my new year. Summer is hectic and the cooler air brings a feeling of productivity and determination, which is a welcome change to an extremely busy three months of weddings and weekends away. I finally feel like reality is setting in, and with Alex and I moving into our new office this week, I am ready to start making the most of my days without distraction. The days are getting shorter, and now more than ever I feel like I need to cram anything and everything into the twelve short hours of light that we have available.

Does fall make you feel this way too? More productive? Maybe it's that back-to-school feeling I had for so many years, but it is one thousand times better knowing that it is my own business that I am driving with my hard work. What is giving you that extra push these days?

Your Fall Wardrobe

Anyone feeling like they are in need of some great pieces for fall? I was too until I went through my entire closet this past weekend and woke up my wardrobe. {I can't wait to wear this sweater on a daily basis}.

I have added a few new pieces here and there, like these loafers and these adorable booties.

I found the perfect peter pan collar that doesn't seem super fuzzy, and pulled out some old favorites.

I was super excited to bring out my favorite fall jacket, now I just need the temperature to cool down a bit.

So if you are in need of a few new pieces for fall, are looking to revamp your wardrobe, organize your closet, or create some new looks with what you already have - email me! Whether you live in Chicago or not, there are a bunch of ways we can work together!

Weekend Style

One of my favorite weekend style's to date. The perfect balance of feminine and edge. Happy Saturday!

Trust Me, It Works

Visiting New York did something to me. It put me in front of an incredible amount of women that I look up to and admire for their talent and constant inspiration. Women like Molly and Sally, Bradley, Mackenzie, VictoriaSarah, Bri, Alex, Grace, Alicia, and so many more. Women that have enviable careers in fashion, graphic design, social media, branding, and styling. Women that are my age, and that I am proud to say are my peers in this big blog world.

When I first decided to go to NY, I immediately sent out emails trying to fill up my time and meet everyone possible. It's strange going into a situation knowing a person without actually meeting a person, but blogging makes you feel like we are all just a big group of girlfriends! Don't you agree? I can't tell you how refreshing it is when the women you meet are actually the women you read on their blogs, and meeting a new friend happens in an instance, like you've been friends all along. This happened with almost every person I met in NY, and it made me hope that all of you feel the same way about me.

It also made me want to make this blog something more, and be a bigger part of the blog world and the endless opportunities it can provide you if you give and take it all. So for those of you just starting out, feeling like you're in a rut, or still trying to map your way through the blog world - take advice from the quote above. "Be the type of person that you want to meet." Trust me, it works.

Fall Shoes

After admiring all of the insane NYFW street style images spamming the web this past week, I have to say that I am experiencing some serious shoe envy. The perfect shoe can go a long way, so investing in one pair that can transform every and any outfit is usually worth it.  Whether it is a sweet ballet flat, cap toed loafers, snake skin pumps, glitter, jeweled, or studded sandals - I would love to fill my closet with all of the above.
