Home Necessities

First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your comments on yesterday's post about styling with boys. I will definitely take your advice and ask for his opinion, make sure the couch is comfortable, keep the walls more neutral {except maybe at least one wall of wallpaper}, and accent with whatever I please. I would have to agree, I think my style is going to come out in the details, and here are a few favorites that I am trying to budget for...

Where do you save and splurge in your home? We are trying not to spend a ton of money on the furniture which is saving us money to decorate, but it is so difficult!

  1. I pretty much love all of these but I really need the topiary and the sea urchins on the asap!

  2. I love all of these home accents, but particularly the black greek key rug and ikat pillows!

  3. I typically opt to save on wood items (I prefer thrifted coffee tables, dining tables, etc) and splurge a little more on fabric items (chairs, blankets, etc). My main rule of thumb is to check the consignment shops and Home Goods, Marshalls, etc FIRST, and then see what I still need after that. Some things gave me sticker shock when it came time to decorate. Like throw pillows. So I usually find two inexpensive ones and elevate them with a couple of splurge pieces. Just like you would an outfit.

    I can't wait to see!

  4. I would splurge on your sofa... its a piece you will have for years and sitting on it everyday you will thank yourself! Other than that...I tend to try to save and score thrift stores and floor models on other not as important pieces... Can't wait to see I know the new place is going to be fabulous :-)

  5. Craigslist and spray paint is a good way to save on big pieces so you can splurge on accessories, that's how we furnished our apartment!

  6. Loving all the pretty things you featured here- especially those books! I agree that it's worth it to spend a bit more on the couch and accessories, but save in other areas.

  7. The Brown Elephant north clark (5000ish, i think) is a great resale shop! there's another one in the LP/Lakeview area that is terrible and over priced. I found a great piece of furniture we turned into a bar for $40. I wouldn't buy a resale couch, that kinda creeps me out, but wood-esque pieces, definitely go to resale shops and make it DIY projects!

  8. These are all great finds!! Especially love the blanket! You should have added your amazing gold and white tray to the list - that is still on my wishlist (come on mom or boyfriend, get on that one already ;)!! xxoo.

  9. I like to find furniture on Craigslist and Estate sales and then splurge on fabric and art.

  10. Those Furbish urchins have been on my wish list, I need to pull the trigger! And I love that ikat dinnerware. Craigslist is the best for inexpensive furniture, I save the splurging for unique accessories and art!

  11. That navy ikat dinnerware is beautiful. seriously stunning.
I agree with the other comments - craigslist is a goldmine for furniture (but I might steer clear for the couch... ick)

  15. Love the dinnerware! I would splurge on important furniture, like the couch & bed, and save on other pieces to allow more money for decorating! You just don't want to have a bad couch and then have to replace it later either because it's uncomfortable, or falling apart, or just doesn't look good. Same with the bed!

  16. I try to splurge on furniture since it can be reupholstered or refinished as your tastes change. I try to save on accent pieces since I tend to get rid of them more often. I try to think of it just like my closet - I splurge on classic pieces like a Equipment silk blouse but save on a friendship bracelet from H&M!

  25. I like to splurge on the accessories that make the room. If you're trying to save a little money though, get your furniture from IKEA. The product isn't very expensive and they have stuff from modern to contemporary...something for everyone is there for furniture! We redid our entire living room and dining room with them and it turned out fabulous! We get compliments all the time! Happy decorating!

  30. Love the pops of color! My guy has been fairly generous with letting me decorate as I please, but you've seen my place, I try not to go too girly...my "girly" is to go GLAM. I figure brass and mirror is still manly, right?

I love that lamp. Can you believe I don't own those urchins yet? Me????

  31. i just bought those short topiaries from Furbish and i love them. they are short so they don't hit my tv that is mounted over the mantle. those two books are on my never ending book wish list!

i definitely splurge on the smaller things like pillows and fabric for windows. i feel like those accents really bring a room to life and they are the things i really notice and love every time i walk through a room. i definitely do not splurge on furniture, i still have some of my parents old stuff. Or art. i feel like so much art i can do myself and it is fun to create something beautiful for your own home.

  32. I've saved a ton by scouring Craigslist for unique pieces I can paint or re-upholster to suit my taste. One of my favorite finds was a pair of caned barrel chairs that I re-upholstered in hot pink linen. The craftsmanship of the chairs was already amazing, just needed to put my spin on it.

Also, for what it's worth, they're surprisingly also my bf's favorite thing in our apartment!

    xx
